Cinemagraphs – Putting a Soul into Animated GIFs

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Photography’s magical arrival many a day ago surfaced the myth and superstition that a photograph could capture (i.e. trap) your soul. A myth quickly banished to remedial cultures part of the challenge of the digital age, when image is built on mounds of zeroes and ones, has been to infuse the visual story with the emotional graininess of the human experience. I just came across the digital artistry of photographer Jamie Beck and motion graphic artist Kevin Burg practicing in the most unlikely of places: animated GIFs. They call their works “Cinemagraphs”. The subtle magic they spin through their collective eye and composition is beautiful. Check out the selection below and tell me if you haven’t felt the wand spin overhead.

Miss Aniela – Layers of Meaning

Their evening banter

Originally uploaded by Miss Aniela

I love this photographer. I came across Miss Aniela’s photography a couple of years ago. Drawn by the colour, light and wild spirit in her pictures. Obviously the ‘multiplicity’ or cloning that she was playing with was a big part of the catch. The candy-like layers she delivers is so great – catching you with aesthetic and letting you get into the layers of meaning, emotion and time that can be played with. This is a concept I’ve really wanted to explore more in interactive storytelling. The layers of people’s stories, back, front, sideways etc. Will have fun at some point with it. Go to her Flickr account or http://www.missaniela.com/ .

Stand Up 4 4am

4am project

In March I was invited to a 3 day workshop exploring convergent media with an eclectic group hosted by CrossOver Labs. Led by Frank Boyd we hung out in a 12th century monestary, with the oddest and tackiest interior design imaginable. Loved it!

We huddled, conspired and pitched ideas. I settled into a small group with Anna Douglas and Karen Strunks to work on the “4am Project”, a lovely, quirky project already in existence, with elegant potential and brought by Karen, the 4am Project founder, to expand upon. Our awesome and brilliantly wacky mentor Andre Ktori, Director of FutureMusic Lab at the Univeristy of Wales – the man who inspired the 4am Dance Craze that’s sweeping the nation – guided us along.
